Participants

Participants are the people involved in presenting or writing for a resource. They may be a presenter within a video or an author of a slide deck or white paper. Participants are defined as a system-wide resource in that, for a given person, there is only one occurrence of that person.

As participants are required when creating resources, contributors are allowed to create participants but they can only edit the participants that they have created. They are not allowed to edit all participants. Admins are allowed to edit any participant in the system. This allows, say, a contributor from Company A to create a participant record for someone who works at Company B and then an admin from Company B can ensure that the details for that participant are kept correct.

If a participant has an email address, and that email address matches the email address of a logged-in user, that user can edit their participant details. This can be done from the user’s Settings page.

The only mandatory fields are the person’s first and last name.

If an email address is provided, it can be used for two things:

  • Retrieval of a Gravatar image for that email address to auto-provide a profile image for the person if one is not provided.

  • To allow the user associated with that address to maintain their own details when they are logged into the Hub.

Participants are displayed on a resource’s thumbnail and when looking at a resource’s page. Clicking on a participant’s icon takes the user to the corresponding participant’s page which displays any of the information provided within the profile, along with resources associated with that participant.
